We have heard you play at Barkly Square a few times now, can you tell us how you started your musical career? Has this always been a passion of yours?
Music has always been a part of my life, as I have a very musical family, although it wasn’t until my high school years that it became a strong passion of mine. I started playing guitar and listening to the rock band Tool, and I was hooked. My musical horizons started expanding as I got into Jazz, Soul and more. I played gigs, started singing, went to uni and learnt what I could, and now I’m here in Melbourne making it happen!
What does the future hold for your musical career?
The sky’s the limit! In the short term I’m playing lots of gigs, busking lots, and honing my skills. In the long term, I’ll be writing, recording and performing as much music as I possibly can. Maybe you’ll see me on the silver screen one day?
Who would you consider to be your biggest fan?
My partner. She’s extremely supportive and persistently encouraging, and I can tell she genuinely loves what I do. I’m totally blessed.
What style of music do you love to play?
Everything! These days I’m especially loving pop, rock and soul covers that most people know and relate to. I love to see people really connect with what I’m doing, whether it’s singing and dancing along, or even just sitting back and listening. When the music connects, I’m happy.
Where can we find you on a typical Sunday morning?
In bed, or at the guitar. Singing either way. Or maybe I’d be out to breakfast at one of Melbourne’s great grungy cafes.
Where did you grow up?
Canberra. Great place and people, and beautiful surrounds. But there’s a reason so many young Canberrans move to Melbourne. This place is happening, in every cultural way (music, art, theatre, dance, sport etc) and is definitely where I want to be right now :).
Where do you like to spend your summers?
On the stage of course :P. But if I’m not gigging, playing music on the street, or out seeing a gig, I’d be at the beach whenever I can, or out swing dancing with my wonderful partner.
If we gave you tickets for a return flight anywhere around the world, where would you go?
New Orleans, Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, Belfast, anywhere the music’s good!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration is a very mysterious thing, and whenever I try to control it it flees. When it does come, it’s probably from pursuing my passions as determinedly as I can, experimenting with instruments, and listening to great music. I’m into everything good: rock, pop, soul, jazz, blues, hip hop, funk, romantic, classical, reggae, you name it. I listen to the radio a lot, and my favourite station is probably PBS106.7, but there’s great music on all the stations if you tune in at the right time.
If we were to take a peek inside your car, what would we find?
CDs! They do still exist! I currently have Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, and Jimi Hendrix (Band of Gypsys) alternating spots in my CD player.
